Everyone has a few old t-shirts stored away in the back of their closet— we keep them for their sentimental value, but the years have not been kind! So, why not take an old band tee from Dad’s drawer and give it some new life with tie dye as a fun homemade Father’s Day gift? This tutorial from Oh Yay Studio will teach you how to turn Dad’s dingy old shirt into something he’ll want to wear all the time with the Tulip Fashion Flashback One-Step Tie-Dye Kit!
Tulip Fashion Flashback One-Step Tie-Dye Kit
Dad’s old white or light-colored band tee
Plastic surface cover
Wire rack (optional)
Before you get started on this homemade Father’s Day gift, prewash (and dry, if using the dry technique) Dad’s white or light-colored band tee that you’ll be tie dyeing. Pick out some of Dad’s favorite colors and prepare your tie-dye solutions according to package instructions.
Choose which folding technique you’ll use for this homemade Father’s Day gift. In this project, we use the super simple crumple tie-dye technique— just scrunch the fabric into a crumpled mound and secure with rubber bands!
Place your project onto a wire rack or protected work surface. Wear a pair of gloves included in the Tulip Fashion Flashback One-Step Tie-Dye Kit, then apply dye to Dad’s band tee! Don't forget to flip your scrunched fabric over and apply dye to the backside as well. Place it in a sealed bag or cover with plastic to keep damp while the dye sets, 6 to 8 hours or overnight for more intense colors.
Once the dye has set, remove the rubber bands and launder according to package instructions. Your homemade Father’s Day gift is ready! Get ready to surprise Dad with this colorful rendition of his favorite old band tee.
