We think one of the most enjoyable parts of decorating for Christmas is all of the options! From traditional to glam to natural to kitschy, the possibilities are seriously endless. We love this holiday decoration idea from Mikyla Creates – a tie-dye tasseled tree skirt – because of course we love anything tie dye, any time of year! Check out this easy tutorial for how to make your own tie-dye tasseled Christmas tree skirt and get inspired to add some extra color to your holiday décor this year!
Tulip One-Step Tie Dye – desired kit or colors
- White or cream-colored tree skirt
- Cotton yarn in the same color as tree skirt
- Spatula to help make your tassels
- Scissors
- Spray bottle
- Disposable plastic surface cover
- Paper towels
- Embroidery needle/thread
For this holiday decoration idea, you only need a few supplies for such a fun, colorful result! First, you’ll start by making your tassels. (They’re super easy to DIY!)
Use an item like a spatula (or even a piece of cardboard) to wrap your yarn around. You’ll want an item that’s about the same width as the length you’d like your tassels to be. Wrap the yarn around your item as many times as you’d like for the thickness of your tassels. Mikyla wrapped hers around a spatula 50 times.
Cut the looped yarn off of the spatula, cutting only on one end (not both).
Cut a strand of yarn the length that you want your tassel hanger to be. Lay your cut group of strands vertically on your work surface, then place the extra strand you just cut for the hanger across the group of yarn, laying it horizontally and at the halfway point. Fold the group of yarn strands in half over the top of the single hanger strand.
Cut another strand of yarn and tie it around your group of strands just below the top to form your tassel. Repeat this process to create as many tassels as you’ll need to fit around your tree skirt.
Trim the bottom of the tassel so you have a clean, even edge.
Now it’s time to get your tassels ready for tie dye! Cover your work surface with a plastic table cover and mix your dyes according to instructions.
Add some water to a spray bottle and mist the tassels to dampen them.
Squeeze dyes onto the bottom halves of the tassels so they look dip dyed. You can do all one color or as many as you like! Once you’ve dyed your tassels, you can use paper towels to help dab away some of the moisture, then let them dry completely so the dye can set.
You’re almost finished with this fun holiday decoration idea! Once your tassels are completely dry, spread them evenly around the tree skirt to get an idea for placement. Thread the hanger strand of the tassel through an embroidery needle, then simply make one loop through the edge of the tree skirt and tie a knot to secure the tassel in place. Repeat with all tassels to attach to the skirt.
Place your tree skirt around your tree and enjoy your colorful tie-dye creation! It’s one fun way to make your Christmas extra merry & bright this year. What holiday decoration ideas are you making this year with Tulip Color Products? Make sure to tag us on social @tulipcolorcrafts and let us know!
